Youth
Relationships are the key! We offer experiences where our young people can ask questions openly and honestly about faith and strive toward being a better disciple of Jesus Christ. Mission, worship, study, small group time, and reflection combined with fellowship and fun = phyouth! This ministry is for grades 6-12 and happens on Sunday evening. It is the cornerstone of our weekly youth activities; it includes Bible Study, worship opportunities, choir and handbells.
Sunday School
Our Confirmation experience is Sunday School for the 6th grade). Over the last five years, almost 200 6th-graders have taken the year-long class to learn about discipleship. Many families have found a home at PHUMC because their child first was part of confirmation. Field trips, spiritual practices, mission, retreats and classes help young people understand and experience God. In addition to confirmation, we offer grade-level Sunday School for 7-12-graders, plus our Agape Class for youth with special needs.
The Mission Experience
We are convinced that a mission “trip” is something you take – but a mission “experience” is something that lasts a lifetime. The point of any mission is three-fold: 1) To work with the people on what they need, not what we think they need; 2) Learn something to bring home with you and use this new knowledge in your community; 3) Build community on your team and with the people you come into contact with.
In addition to the three weeks of mission work in Arkansas each summer, our experiences have ranged from providing Vacation Bible School in the Bahamas to being educated about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and protesting at a restaurant for not paying a living wage in New York City. From building a casita (or small house) in Mexico to doing inventory at the United Methodist Committee on Relief outside of New Orleans, we want to be the hands, feet and mind of Christ!
